Full Kite Australian kiters new to snow kiting in Montreal

  Hello everyone,

My girlfriend is currently studying in Montreal and I'm heading over to visit mid December. We are both kitesurfers in Australia and very keen to snowkite - both ski/snowboard already.

We were planning to head to Oka, unless people have other suggestions?

I ride 10m North Vegas and girlfriend rides 8m North Evo. I am wondering if people have recommendations for buying/hiring kites & harnesses in Montreal or pay for excess luggage and bring our own over? - possibly sell them in Montreal before we leave.

We would be keen to meet up with local crew (we're in our early/mid 20's) for a few sessions during December.

Tom

  Hi Tom,

Gear is not that cheap here anyways so I would recomend to bring your kites but skis an snowboards can be found anywhere between free and a few hundred bucks. As for Oka, the lake is not frozen yet, we need a few days below -10 and it will be a done deal. Then we need better snow coverage and this is also well underway smiley ... So stay tune d keep this thread alive so we can update you. There are many, many spots for winter and fields are the first ones to be ready the kiteproject is a great one. The lakes might be ready for mid December, if not it will take about 15 more days or so.

Transportation will be your main issue, first find a car, then don't kill us... I just say that cuz I am not that safe when I drive downunder the othewayaround...lol

Thanks everyone for the replies. Will make kite project our first priority.

Will be sure to keep this thread going to keep up to date with the conditions.

I am planning to hire a car (also planning not to kill anyone) so will hopefully be able to get around.

What do people think about the kite sizes? A 10m for me at ~80kg?

8 and 10 are the sizes you need to kite on modt days worth kiting... Aaaahhhh, if you want to get going in sub 10 knots you might need bigger and in 30 knots blizzards you will need smaller but for the 10-25 knot range you are pretty much set. On a snowboard in deep snow, the range on your kite is roughly the same, for icy/hard pack you shift the range of your kite by 3-5knots towards the bottom end. If kiteproject is your thing, they are 25% off si 90$ all you can eat instead of 120$. Once the Lakes are frozen you kite for free but KP has better snow usually (with small hills, kickers and fun stuff).

10 Speed 4 is pretty much my One kite quiver for the winter. Takes a lot less power on snow unless the snow is wet and sticky... then you need some good wax smiley

Have fun and stay on the right side of the road... smiley

  Hi guys,
how's the snow looking?

Still unsure whether I'll bring kites over or buy in Monreal so if anyone has kites or harness' for sale or is going away and interested in a sell/buyback arrangement during our 2week stay please let me know.
